Healthy chocolate peanut butter smoothie

This chocolate peanut butter smoothie is the best!  Does anyone else wake up with a craving for a certain type of breakfast?  I always do.  I either wake needing definitely sweet or definitely savoury, it a definite need, though, not just a fancy.  Is anyone else like this? I can’t be on my own, surely.  Anyway, for the majority of the time I want a sweet breakfast, have I mentioned before that I have a sweet tooth? The more dessert like the better, in my opinion, and this chocolate peanut butter smoothie does not disappoint.

This smoothie has it all.  You would be forgiven for mistaking this smoothie as just pure indulgence, a treat, but it’s definitely not only that.  This smoothie is still packed with goodness, so you can enjoy the decadence while basking in the knowledge that your health goals are still intact.

If you have read my other smoothie recipes, you will know that they all have a few things in common.  Things that will always be at the base of the smoothie, for the taste and nutrients alike.

Frozen bananas

I know, I know I say this one a lot but it is so important.  It will change your smoothie game, I promise you.  Unless you like your smoothies warm, you need some kind of ice.  Ice does water them down though, which is fine if you like them thinner.  I’m guessing most people are like me though and would prefer thicker smoothies that are still ice cold.  Drum role please for the frozen bananas!  Bananas are a must in all of my smoothies because they make a great creamy base, the fact that they are frozen too is an added bonus because they make it ice cold without the liquid.

Flax seeds

I try and put ground flax seeds in everything I can.  Omega 3 is something everyone needs in their diet and if you do not eat lots of fish, you may not be getting enough.  The benefits don’t just stop there either; there are plenty of reasons to add flax seeds to your diet, from more fibre to lowering cholesterol. They are so easy to mix with everything, I put them in smoothies, porridge, no bake sweet goods, it is even great sprinkled on top of granola.  The possibilities are almost endless, but the health benefits really are worth checking out.

Leafy greens

Everyone needs more leafy greens in their life, they are such an important part of our diet. I feel like a smoothie without added greens is a real missed opportunity.  They do not add flavour to the drink at all, so why wouldn’t you add them in?

Milk

I have used oat milk in this recipe.  It is my favourite plant based milk, it is really inoffensive and goes well with everything.  Of course you could switch this up with your favourite plant based milk too, almond milk would work really well.

Cacao

This wonder powder is so nutritious.  It is packed with goodness and even boasts helping with things like high blood pressure and inflammation.  A real win in my book.  Obviously it also has the added benefit of that gorgeous chocolate taste without any added sugar.  Bonus!

Peanut butter

Not all nut butters are created equal, did you know that?  The peanut butter I remember from when I was younger was so salty and sticky, I hated it.  I now realise that this was not really peanut butter, but the “fake” kind with added palm oil, loads of salt and copious amounts of sugar.  Not a good health food at all.  The 100% nut butters you can buy now are just delicious and are very good for you, they provide the good fat that you need in your diet.

Now it goes without saying that too many calories are not a great idea.  So if you eat enough calories every day, be careful not to overindulge in those nut butters.

If smoothies are your thing, or you want to start trying them because you know of the health benefits they can bring then check out my mixed berry smoothie recipe here.  Or my gloriously green breakfast smoothie recipe here.

Enjoy
