Eating breakfast is so important, it sets you up for the morning, giving you that much needed boost of energy.  A healthy breakfast gives you the added benefits of a huge nutritional boost first thing and the psychological satisfaction that you are being good to yourself.

Smoothies are also so incredibly quick and easy a must in a busy household.  It is so easy to grab a quick breakfast that is just complete junk and lacks any nutritional value, especially when you are rushing for work, or getting the kids ready for school.  But I know for me, if I eat a healthy breakfast I feel good.  If I make my girls a healthy breakfast, it really boosts my mood.

This healthy berry smoothie has two servings of fruit and one serving of vegetables and is satisfyingly sweet.  Putting a large serving of vegetables in your smoothie is a great idea for boosting your daily nutrients, in my opinion, it would be crazy not to when you have that opportunity. I have however heard a lot of people say they are nervous to use vegetables in a smoothie or that they have had a bad experience with one.  I’m here to tell you that there is a trick to it and to persevere, it will be worth it.

The trick

The trick is to use vegetables that do not have a strong distinctive taste, I used baby spinach in this recipe but I often use kale too. The benefits of these vegetables are plenty, from a boost of iron to lots of calcium for starters.  Next you need to use enough fruit to sweeten the taste.  Don’t just put a load of spinach in and then a tiny banana and expect it to taste good!

Another good idea is to use mixed fruit, the flavour needs to overpower the flavour of the spinach.  I like to use frozen fruit for this recipe.  I used raspberries and blueberries but your favourite berries will do just fine too.  Both spinsch and berries are super foods, I maybe should have called this smoothie a “super food smoothie”.

As with all of my smoothies, a frozen banana is an absolute must.  It takes a normal smoothie to an ice cream smoothie and is great at getting it ice cold too.  This negates the need for ice cubes that will just water it down.  How many of you have a bunch of bananas in your kitchen that are getting really ripe.  The kind that need to be eaten NOW or they will go to waste?  Freeze them, you won’t regret it.  If you are in the mood for smoothies now the weather is warming up my gloriously green breakfast smoothie is also delicious!

Flax seeds

I always out ground flax seeds in all of my smoothies.  In fact I put them in almost all breakfasts I make from porridge to pancakes.  They are so full of goodness and omega 3 fatty acids which are so important for optimal health.  This is really important if you eat a plant based diet because it is a little more tricky to get enough omega 3’s in your diet sometimes if you are not conscious of it.

Milk

You can make smoothies with water but I much prefer a creamy consistency.  In this recipe I have used almond milk but I also swap this out for oat milk regularly too, both work beautifully and allow you to make this recipe completely plant based too.

I hope this makes you up your smoothie game and inspires you to make nutrient dense smoothies to benefit your health.

Health and happiness as always
